About Me

My name is Holly Sharp. I'm from North West Indiana. I'm a wife and mother of three. My parental grandmother Mary Florence Taylor was an Irish woman born in Waltham Mass. Her father was from Ireland and her grandfather William McMullen was from Tyrone County, Northern Ireland.

Though my grandmother was born in the States she could speak Gaelic and because of her I've always had a life long passion for our family's roots.

About Me

My great great grandparents were John and Jane (McMullen) Peterson. Jane emigrated to Ontario, Canada with her parents John and Margaret (Dudgeon) McMullen. I would love to continue leaning about John and Margaret's history in Ireland. Where they lived, their family history, etc.

About Me

I trace my McMullen heritage back to my seventh great-grandfather, born in 1673 in Antrim, Ireland. My maternal grandmother, Nellie McMullen had strong genes, providing me with my dashing Irish good looks!

My wife traces her Irish heritage back as far as Prince Iar Mac Dedad O'Haongus of Ireland in 160 BC.

About Me

Born in Myrtle Point, Oregon to Dora Belle McMullen (daughter of Richard Lewis McMullen and Mary Ella Panter) and Charles H. Cole. Richard was the youngest of 13 born to James McMullen and Susan Hannah. James was born in Ireland to David McMullen and Ellen Strong. James married Susan Hannah in Canada and immigrated to Michigan when my grandfather was approximately 3 years of age. They had 3 girls, Florence, Dora, and Mary Jean.  My grandmother had previously been married and had 3 other children. My mother Dora and my father divorced in 1942 and my sister and myself were raised by our stepfather Russell Train. He adopted us before our mother passed away from cancer in  1949. They had 2 more childre, Carolyn and Arthur. I married in 1957 and we had 6 children, 2 girls and 4 boys. My husband of 47 years passed away in 2005. My eldest daughter, Tammy passed away in 2007. My son Rusty does a lot of reseach. He also does wood cravings and plans a trip to Scotland and Ireland this fall. I have remarried to a Robert Mast, but kept my previous married name.

About Me

I am a web designer, living in Chicago, Illinois. I've traced my line back to the 1600's in Northern Ireland. My Immigrating Ancestor was James McMillen, one of three brothers to come over from Ballymena, Northern Ireland in 1853. His line goes back to Samuel McMullen, who was born in Carmony, Northern Ireland in 1684.

Per my research, my line changed spellings a few times, from McMillen to McMillan with Eneas McMillan, born in 1777 in Antrim, Northern Ireland, and then again with Samuel McMullen, his great great grandfather.

Samuel McMullen is my 9th Great Grandfather, and I'm hoping to one day go back even further!

About Me

My GG Grandparent's married at the Down Cathedral (Church of Ireland) in Downpatrick, County Down, Ireland May 2, 1844. They were John McMullan or McMullen and Margaret Orr. Their first son, Arthur was born in Downpatrick in 1845. In 1847 my Great Grandfather, William John was baptized at Holy Trinity Cathedral (Anglican) in Quebec City, Quebec (John signed this baptism as "McMullian", so perhaps that's the spelling he preferred). Unfortunately, I don't know John's fate. The last glimpse of him was an 1850 Montreal directory where he is shown as a shoemaker.

At some point William John changed the spelling of the name to McMillan. It's possible he did this to differentiate himself from other William McMullen's in Wellington County, Ontario.

The family had lived in Montreal, Quebec; Kingston, Ontario; Fergus & Palmerston, Ontario; and by 1879 William John relocated to Breckenridge, Minnesota and later to St Paul, Minnesota. William John was the personal conductor for James Jerome Hill who built the railroad from The Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean. In 1913, William John started the Great Northern Railway Veteran's Association which was a social outlet for retirees, and helped with retirement funds. He was President from 1913 up to his death in 1930.

William John McMillan Jr, (my Grandfather) was born at Fergus in 1869. My Father, William John McMillan III was born at Gladstone, OR in 1904. My Brother, William John McMillan IV, and I were born in the mid 1940's in Oregon City, Oregon. By 1947, our family relocated to Camas, Washington, and I still live in the general area.

Glad to be part of this group!! I have had the Y-DNA 67 marker test, and am hopeful to eventually tie into more definitive information for my Irish McMillan roots.

I've also had autosomal DNA tests at ancestry.com; 23andMe; and Family Finder at Family Tree DNA. The free website gedmatch.com is a good place to compare chromosomes. My gedmatch numbers are: F260182; M142720 amd A176526

About Me

I live in Pennsylvania withy my wife and two children. I am an IT consultant for a large global consulting firm. I've only traced my line of McMullin back to around 1847 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where my great great grandfather, Alexander (Mc) Mullin was born according to his marriage record in Philadelphia. Family lore states that our Mullin family were McMullin at one time and came from Ireland. It appears that Alexander was the one who dropped the 'Mc' when he joined the Union army at the age of 14 as there are records of him in his regiment as both McMullin and Mullin. Looking forward to the day when I discover when my family came to America from Ireland and from where.

About Me

Our family came from Cloontra in Clare. We are MILLANES but our name is part of Maolain, Mullane etc derivations as well. All different variations of the spelling are our lot too. We can trace our lot back to around 1700's with some certainty but it gets fuzzy after that. Hope that we can find out more. It is said, that Dan OÇonnell had a mother who was a O'Millane~! Family left Ireland in 1850's and came to the gold fields here in Australia. Large families are descended from them.
